RAPID ACTION NETWORK :: BELARUS
Dear colleagues and friends of the Belarus PEN-Club,
The PEN Centre of German-Speaking Writers Abroad is sending you this
letter in order to demonstrate our solidarity with you and your commitment
to human rights and democracy.
Like many other PEN-Centres, we have written a letter of protest to
President Lukashenka, in which we demand the immediate release of your
Vice-President Andrej Dynko and the poet Iryna Darafiejchuk from prison.
Our Centre stands for the unequivocal defence of human rights, in
particular the freedom of expression and the right to peaceful protest.
We are very shocked by the unfolding events in your country and we salute
your courage and commitment. As writers we are conscious of the enormous
strength of the word. Our historical memory tells us: No power is made for
eternity, political regimes may rise but they also fall, and the arrogant
dictators of today may be the prisoners of tomorrow.
In this sense we hope that your dream of democracy, the non-violent
pursuit of the ideas of 1989 will one day overwhelm the regime in your
country. Working for this day, your Centre and its members should know
that you are not alone in your endeavours. We stand by you.
Warm-hearted greetings
Chaim Noll
Secretary, PEN-Centre of German-Speaking Writers Abroad
